Fast Ethernet (Fast E) is so called because it stepped up the original speed of Ethernet (10Mbps) to be able to provide speeds of up to 100 Mbps. It requires a carrier to place a router in your building so that you can connect directly to their network. While this is great when you are in a location with access to Fast E, it also limits the availability of this product.

How fast is a Fast Ethernet circuit?

Very fast. It can provide dedicated access at speeds of up to 100 Mbps which is enough to meet the needs of most businesses except for very large enterprises. It allows you to choose a speed to meet your needs while providing bandwidth for email, Internet connections, cloud computing, VoIP and more.

How much does a Fast Ethernet circuit cost?

A Fast E circuit requires that the carrier's router be located very close to your office. This has limited the growth as most carriers will only place a router with very large businesses, universities, or office buildings with several tenants. However, if you happen to have acess to Fast E, it can be more cost effective than other high bandwidth options. Since you're dealing with large circuits the pricing will usually start at around $50 per megabit of bandwidth.
